Super Y League Game Reports 2011

Thompson Okanagan Trip to Super Y League North American Finals in Tampa, Florida

The Thompson Okanagan Football Club U 15 girl’s team clinched first place in the Northwest division of the North American wide Super Y League this past weekend in Burnaby.  The team split a weekend series with Mountain Football Club from Vancouver conceding a 3 – 2 loss on Saturday, but playing to a dramatic 2-1 win on Sunday’s winner take-all match. The team will be the first ever female team to represent the Thompson Okanagan and Canada at the  Super Y North American Championship  from December 2 to 6, in Tampa, Florida.
The Thompson Okanagan team opened the scoring in Saturday’s game when Kira Lee hit a 45 yard shot which bounced over the Mountain keeper.  Mountain quickly recovered, however, and took a 2-1 lead into half-time. Thompson Okanagan tied the game early in the second half when speedster Kennedy Snape took a pass on the right wing and ripped a shot over the Mountain goalie from just outside the eighteen yard line. The tie was broken when Mountain took the lead for good with about 20 minutes remaining in the half.  This loss for the squad made the Sunday match a do or die situation to qualify for Florida.
The Thompson Okanagan squad came out strong in the Sunday game controlling much of the early play, only to find themselves 0-1 at the 10 minute mark after a long free kick by Mountain, and a goal mouth scramble.  Soon after, Haylee Lakovic evened the score on a fabulous individual effort outracing two Mountain defenders and their goalie to neatly place the ball in the corner.  The Thompson Okanagan team pushed hard for the go ahead goal early in the second half with several chances on goal, but the Mountain keeper was able to preserve the tie. Mountain continued to press hard in the last twenty minutes of the must-win game when Lakovic once again out battled a Mountain defender hitting a shot from just outside the eighteen yard line off the finger tips of the Mountain keeper into the net.  The jubilant TOFC team celebrated a 2-1 win against Mountain to secure the berth at Nationals.
Super Y league coaching staff was extremely pleased with his team’s performance, stating, “ It was a complete team effort that got us through these games and the entire season. They have worked very hard and are very deserving of the trip to Florida.” Under Hemmerling’s leadership the team has come close to advancing to Florida twice in the past four years, narrowly missing a berth in the National Tournament by a goal scored by a Mountain goal, scored with three minutes remaining in the qualifying match two years ago. Players contributing to the team’s success include: Dani Rivet, Kaisha Trefry, Courtney Hemmerling, Haleigh Penner, Jodie Fedkiw, Ashley Stemler, Kennedy Snape (Kelowna) Paige Martin(Kamloops), Kiana Chuhaniuk, Jenna Rever (Lake Country), Casey Loudoun, Haylee Lakovic, Haley Loudoun (West Kelowna)Cassy Lukey, Paige Ralston, Kira Lee, Emma Byskov (Vernon)Katie Harding (Salmon Arm) Assistant Coaches Greg Lakovic and Jacques Rivet, as well as Manager Tyna Trefry have been an integral part of this team’s success.

“Corporate sponsorship and private donations are really needed to help us reach our fundraising goal.  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for these girls to experience international level soccer and a great chance for you, the community to lend your support.  If you are able to donate or provide sponsorship please call Tyna Trefry at (250) 765-0160.  We are planning a large fundraising event and details will be released soon.”
